BBSQ Hosts Successful 5-Day Workshop for Businesses

Nassau, [14 December 2023] — The Bahamas Bureau of Standards and Quality (BBSQ) recently concluded a highly successful workshop aimed at enhancing the Quality Infrastructure of The Bahamas. The event, hosted from December 6th to 8th and 11th to 12th at the New Providence Community Centre, saw the active participation of over 80 attendees, ranging from businesses to laboratories.

The comprehensive five-day training session, partially funded by the 11th EDF-EPA-TBT Programme, focused on three vital international standards: ISO 15189 for Medical Laboratories, ISO/IEC 17025 for Testing and Calibration Laboratories, and ISO 9001 for Quality Management Systems.

Senator Hon. Michael Halkitis, who delivered the keynote address during the opening ceremony, provided attendees with valuable insights and perspectives. “Let us collectively build a Bahamas where quality isn’t just a standard but a way of life—a testament to the commitment in creating a nation known for quality, trust, and excellence on the global stage. This transformative journey towards excellence in quality management is not just an aspiration but a commitment echoing through every aspect of our professional lives”, said the Minister.

BBSQ Executive Director, Dr. Renae Ferguson-Bufford also expressed her enthusiasm following the success of the workshop. “Empowering Bahamian businesses with international best practices is at the heart of our mission at the Bahamas Bureau of Standards and Quality. This workshop marked a pivotal step in our ongoing efforts to build a resilient Quality Infrastructure for The Bahamas. We’re dedicated to ensuring that our industries not only meet but surpass global standards, contributing to a robust and competitive national economy.”

The standards covered during the workshop play a crucial role in ensuring the accuracy, reliability, and safety of clinical testing in medical laboratories, facilitating precision and accuracy in measurements across various industries, and offering a universal framework for enhancing product and service quality, customer satisfaction, and operational efficiency.

Ms. Sharonmae Shirley, Chief Executive Director of JANAAC, expressed the importance of the standards and agency’s gratitude for being a part of the elevation of the Quality Infrastructure of The Bahamas.

The Bahamas Bureau of Standards and Quality also displayed its appreciation to JANAAC, the 11th EDF, and the Caribbean Regional Organisation for Standards and Quality (CROSQ) for their unwavering support in making the workshop a reality.
